In the end she takes nice guy Lucky away from Kay, just in the nick of time, as Jack returns from the war to resume his happy marriage.Īfter the re-writes, the film’s message of women finding friendship and professional gratification at the work-place is overshadowed by the wartime romance–which proves you can love more than one guy. Kay’s single singer cottage neighbor and co-worker on the swing shift, Hazel ( Christine Lahti ), pals around with both during these war years. Kay’s jazz trumpeter foreman, Lucky Lockhart (Kurt Russell), a 4-F because of a weak heart, keeps asking her out until she says yes. His homemaker wife Kay (Goldie Hawn) gets a riveter job on the swing shift (midnight) at the McBride airplane factory, just outside the city. When Pearl Harbor is attacked, Santa Monica, California, married cottage resident Jack Walsh (Ed Harris) enlists in the Navy. The credited writer is Rob Morton, a pseudonym for Nancy Dowd. The conventional period romantic drama has good details of the period and some fine dramatic moments, that at least kept it from being a bomb. Goldie, a big star at this time, clashed with director Jonathan Demme (“Silence of the Lambs”/”Swimming to Cambodia”/”Married to the Mob”) and forced upon him several script re-writes. The film gets over despite problems with the t wo stars (Goldie & Kurt, who fell in love during the filming and wanted the film to center on their illicit affair rather than on her friendship with her neighbor Lahti). “ The conventional period romantic drama has good details of the period and some fine dramatic moments, that at least kept it from being a bomb.” Anyway, despite the questionable change in tone, it's a decent enough programmer, especially the bouncy first half.SWING SHIFT (director: Jonathan Demme screenwriter: Rob Morton cinematographer: Tak Fujimoto editor: Craig McKay music: Patrick Williams cast: Goldie Hawn ( Kay Walsh), Ed Harris ( Jack Walsh), Kurt Russell ( Lucky Lockhart), Christine Lahti (Hazel ), Holly Hunter ( Jeannie), Fred Ward (Biscuits), Charles Napier ( Moon Willens) Runtime: 105 MPAA Rating: PG producer: Jerry Bick Warner Brothers 1984) Upon returning to work, the employee’s team will adopt different hours from the previous seven-hour block. Southern Swing: This schedule requires employees to work eight hours per shift for seven consecutive days. Also, the little episode with Iris's long locks explains why the iconic Rosie is always pictured with bundled hair. Too bad, but then it seems good comedy scripts are harder to do than good melodrama- maybe that's why.

The transition is rather skillfully managed still, the movie loses its bouncy strong point, becoming almost melodramatic instead. They may also add another one to run through the dinner period because of the sales volume, as well. In fast food service, managers may add a swing shift that runs through the busy lunch period because that is their peak time of day. And to spice things up, we don't just wonder which girl Breezy (Craig) will end up with, there are even hints that it might be both! (Pretty naughty for the time.) But then the screenplay turns gradually somber as the troubled Iris (Rogers) takes over and the breezy Breezy drops out of sight. Swing shifts are also great to add support during busy periods. Then too, Sothern and Craig act out the lines with bounce and sass. The first half is almost delightful, thanks to a light touch and some snappy dialog.
